If you’re willing to try it, building your own PC allows yous to get a ameliorate quality estimator for less money. Here are the parts I’d choose for budgets from under $500 to $2,500.

Why Not Build Your Own Editing Dream Machine?

Buying a PC for photo or video editing is expensive, especially if you buy a pre-built machine.

Instead,
why not build a PC how yous want it?
If you’ve got a budget of nether $500 or even over $2,000, this article volition help you find compatible parts. From there, putting it together is uncomplicated.

How much should you lot spend? That depends on how much y’all utilize your computer for rendering and other tasks and how intensive those tasks are. Overall, if you can salvage a significant amount of time by raising your budget, you lot’re meliorate off doing and so.

In this article, I’ll comprehend the parts I recommend based on your budget.

For Photo and Video Editing, the Processor Is King

The last place you desire to curt yourself on your photograph editing build is the processor.

Here’due south a table of where I’d rank the all-time processors for the coin in late 2022. Below, you’ll also be able to find a table with 6 total builds from $500 to $2500.

For AMD Builders

Fantastic Adobe Premiere Benchmarks, 7Zip, and Adobe Photoshop Benchmarks for AMD give it a strong case vs Intel for building your photo editing PC. Adding gaming into the mix gives a slight, albeit hardly noticeable, advantage to Intel.

When AMD launched Zen 3, Ryzen’s 5000 series bested Intel in pretty much every scenario. Intel’due south 11th gen countered it fairly well albeit with a fairly ability-hungry platform.

The
Ryzen v 5600X
is a dandy option with its six cores and 12 threads might exist the perfect editing and gaming crossover pick. And, if I was going to build a PC in the $i,000 range in 2022, I’d certainly get with it.

Thoughts on AMD

Right now it’s difficult to not like AMD. On the low stop, the 4 cadre and 8 thread Ryzen 5 5600G gives you an integrated graphics option that would work fine for some photo editing. Upper heart range you’ve got the Ryzen 9 5900X and on the loftier-end you’ve got the incredible Threadripper Pro 5975WX with a massive 32 cores and 64 threads.

Perhaps the 1 place where Intel is edging up on the high-terminate for workstations is the i9-12900k which outperforms the Ryzen 9 5950X.

My All Around AMD Enthusiast Pick

Want a reasonably priced role that gives you 12 core / 24 thread ability? The Ryzen nine 5900X is where you should exist looking. This fantastic all-effectually CPU allows you to support a plethora of software at a loftier level and even game on the side.

For most builds in the $1,500 to $2,000 range, it should be perfect.

For Intel Builders

If you prefer Intel, I think you’ve got a lot to look forward to in 2023. Right at present the i9-10980XE is a great selection for high-end users, the i9-12900K is solid for upper heart range, the i7-12700k beats the Ryzen 7 5800X. And while information technology’s important to proceed in heed that the Ryzen 7 5800X is $l cheaper, the i7-12700k actually beats the Ryzen ix 5900X in some threaded applications.

If You’re on a Upkeep

One actually nice option for Intel is their F serial processors for budgets. To a higher place I listed the i5-12400F which is a fantastic CPU for around $175. And fifty-fifty the $100
Intel i3-12100F
even gives you 4 cores and eight threads.

Compared to where we were merely a few years ago, I call up you can should be encouraged as a PC builder headed into 2023.

The RX 6600XT is a very affordable choice and gives y’all a lot of bang for your buck at its price range.

I prefer gaming-style graphics cards for photo editing. Most of the photo editing and rendering software that a typical hobbyist would use performs very well with the affordable
XFX Speedster SWFTR RX 6600.

It’s a very affordable card that makes a large divergence. From there, I’d upgrade to the RX 6600XT and 3060Ti.

If you demand the best of the all-time you may decide to pay the premium to get something similar the RTX 3090Ti. Withal, for most, this will be overkill.

Based on your budget, I’ve put together some premade builds below that residual your budget with your processor graphics card and everything else.

The Table Above Isn’t for Everyone

Non everyone needs the highest-end graphics card. In fact, some of you may make up one’s mind that allocating more of your budget to storage, or a better CPU is the better option. This volition depend upon the software that yous use regularly, and then please keep that in mind.

For Budgets From $150 to $300

Equally you tin run across in the builds table, I recommend you go for something like the RX 6600 for effectually $200 and at around $300 the 6600XT. And depending on what type of software yous’re using, even these options may or may not be worth it.

So, you lot’ll desire to look upwards benchmarks that represent the blazon of software you personally apply. Photoshop performance, for case, is still heavily reliant on unmarried-core CPU operation.

While I’m hoping that going forwards Photoshop will limit its reliance on a single cadre, it’southward what we have right at present.

Just looking for a build? Here are five options from $500 to $2,500 that I feel requite you keen overall value for the money you spend.

*Your Storage options volition vary greatly. So, I’grand just setting a placeholder here that’s a decent value.

Finding the Correct Motherboard

If you’ve never built a reckoner before, it’s important to realize that your motherboard options depend on the processor you choose.

For instance, if you go with the i7-8700k, which is an LGA 1151 socket processor, then yous’ll need a compatible socket 1151 300 series rather than a 200 series motherboard.

It’s easy plenty to look in the product description for the CPU to find out what socket motherboard you need. This basic breakdown may help besides:

Motherboard and Processor Compatibility

Motherboard Types Compatible Processors Notes

Socket 1151 (300 Serial)

Coffee Lake 8th/9th GEN

Requires DDR4. Non compatible with 200 series 1151 motherboards.

Socket 1151

Skylake (sixth GEN), Kaby Lake (7th GEN), 8th Gen, 9th Gen

About motherboards require DDR4. Non compatible with 300 series 1151 motherboards.

Socket AM4

AMD Ryzen

When used with Ryzen 2 some AM4 300 series motherboards may demand a BIOS update – 400 series may exist the safer bet. For the new 3000 Ryzen series the X570/470 motherboards are what I’d recommend.

Socket 2011

Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge

Older processors need a DDR3-compatible motherboard

Socket 2011-v3 X99

Broadwell and Haswell Enthusiast Only

Requires DDR4

Socket 1150

Haswell (fourth generation)

Socket 1155

Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge (second, 3rd generations)

Socket AM3+

AMD FX serial processors

Uniform with older AMD CPUs being sold

Socket FM1 or Socket FM2

AMD Llano, Trinity, Richland APUs

Whether FM1 or FM2 depends on the generation

Choosing a Motherboard for Various Budgets

If you lot’re just looking for my recommendation for your budget, I’ve made a list of all the parts (based on the budget) above.

For the motherboard, I typically look for something that’s reliable and that has all the features I need.

Note:
If this is more than you care to look at, don’t be afraid to skip to my full PC parts list for each budget below. Motherboards listed are uniform with the chosen processors on that list.

Under $500 Build

In the $500 range, attempt and find the to the lowest degree expensive, merely near reliable motherboard available.

$1,000 Build

For the $1,000 build, we’re still trying to relieve every bit much as nosotros can on our motherboard so we can put performance to where it’s going to matter most, our processor. Yous’ll discover that the processor jumps up in every budget I’ve listed above.

While it’s piece of cake plenty to upgrade a graphics card later, when you lot demand to replace your organisation volition likely be determined by your CPU. So, for these builds, we’re going with inexpensive options.

$i,500 and $2,000 Budget Build

In the $1,500 range, we’re entering enthusiast territory, and going with a motherboard that allows us to get a decent overclock is certainly something nosotros want to take advantage of.

That means on the AMD side we’re looking at the X570 series of motherboards. On Intel’s side, the Z490 series. These motherboards are the latest generation and have the best to offer to date.

That existence said, don’t feel like y’all demand to go with an expensive motherboard. A very good overclock can be established on a mid-range motherboard. In improver, these likely take enough slots for all of the hard drives you’ll exist using.

Bank check the motherboard’s specifications if you need more than details.

How Much Ram Is Enough for Photo or Video Editing?

If you plan on upgrading or overclocking your RAM in the futurity, you’ll want a motherboard now that can support more than RAM and/or college speeds.

For Photo Editing

Near professionals don’t use more 32GB of RAM. If you’re making this calculator as a photo editing PC and edit 1 photograph at a fourth dimension, then nearly likely yous’d be fine with simply 16GB.

For multiple photos at one time consider at to the lowest degree 16GB of ram.

For Video Editing

For amateur video editors, I’d recommend 16GB; this tends to be enough to get the job washed when editing Hd video.

For professionals, I’d recommend going with 32GB to start with, and upgrading from at that place if you find that you’re using the full amount.

More than Tips on RAM

If you purchase your RAM in sets of 16GB, DDR4 isn’t that much more expensive than DDR3, and it lets you future-proof your PC.

In my contempo post on the best DDR4 memory or RAM, I talk almost how cheaper memory seems to brand more sense right now due to the lack of performance from more expensive kits. I recommend yous go with something fast just not overly expensive. The Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz series is my recommendation.

Hard Bulldoze and Storage Options: Solid Land Drive or Disk Drive?

Solid-state drives (SSD) work well for storing your OS and applications, or as “scratch disks” designated for temporary use by Photoshop or other programs. That being said, yous’ll take to make up one’s mind whether solid-state is worth it for you, and whether it’due south better than using a RAID configuration (a serial of disk drives).

If yous’re all the same non sure what y’all should do, then come across this Adobe document on optimizing Photoshop performance, which suggests that RAID 0 arrays make swell scratch disks.

Personally, I’ve gotten used to the speed advantages that come with having a solid-land drive for my OS and applications, and I don’t plan on going back. For this build, I’ll recommend a modestly priced SSD along with a disk drive. I employ an SSD to store my Os and applications, and a deejay drive to store videos and photos.

My Picks for SSD and HDD

  • Samsung 970 Evo:
Capacity, speed, and reliability. That’s why I typically go with the
Samsung 970 Evo. And yous’ll definitely desire at least enough capacity to fit your OS and favorite programs on hither.
  • Budget Pick ADATA Premier SP550:
The Kingston A400 SSD is the perfect mix of speed and value. I’d recommend at least the 240GB version so yous take plenty for your operating system and most important programs. The increment in speed of a solid-state drive makes it well worth having for whatsoever machine yous own.
  • HGST Deskstar:
A disk drive should be fast and ultra-reliable: that is, with 7200RPM and a 64 MB cache. I really like the 2TB Seagate Barracuda options available in 2020. They give you 2TB of space for effectually $60.

Depending on your upkeep yous may want to purchase several of these. For the $2,000 build, I’one thousand recommending three.

A Repose Case and Cooler

  • NZXT H510:
For a reasonably priced instance that has bully cable management and is water cooling ready, I like the NZXT H510. It besides has dandy-looking tempered drinking glass which allows you to see your hardware.
  • Fractal Blueprint R5—The Perfect Tranquillity Instance:
Personally, I place an emphasis on cases that keep my organisation cool and quiet. The Fractal Design R5, shown above, not only does all of that, but at a price point that’south affordable. This case looks great, supports as many fans as you’d desire, includes easy-to-install solid-state drive mounts, and has USB 3.0 in the front. It looks professional person and has noise-dampening textile congenital into the example.
  • Corsair 100R Silent ATX Mid Tower:
For a less expensive option with a smaller profile, you should as well consider Corsair’s 100R. Information technology’s a reasonably inexpensive choice that won’t distract from your workspace. This makes it ideal for an office environment where a powerful, but noisy, computer can sometimes distract.

Practice You lot Demand a CPU Cooler?

Intel’s “1000” Series of processors don’t come up with a stock CPU fan, so you’ll definitely need one. However, if you use an selection similar the i5-8400, you lot may desire to use something across just the stock fan to continue your most important piece of hardware cool for the long run.

  • Hyper 212 EVO:
The Hyper 212 Evo is inexpensive and perfect if you plan on doing some light overclocking. For college-end overclocking, consider the Corsair H100i series or NZXT Kraken serial of liquid CPU coolers. If you go with the Hyper 212 EVO it does have a adequately large profile and won’t fit the Corsair 100R Silent belfry above. However, the Fractal Design R5 is plenty big.
  • Corsair Hydro H60:
For a smaller profile liquid libation, consider the Hydro H60. This would be the perfect cooler to work with the Corsair 100R.

A Proficient Monitor for Photo Editing

If you want to read up on this field of study, you lot tin read my post on the best photo editing monitors under $500.

If you’d like to skip all that, then my recommendation to go along this build under $2000 would be the Dell UltraSharp U2715H. It’s a 1440p 27″ monitor so it has plenty of screen real manor.

Most importantly, it comes factory calibrated out of the box at 99% sRGB with a deltaE <iii. For the price, it gives the best color accuracy and consistency out of the box while giving you lot spectacular viewing angles and color with its QHD panel.

Do You Really Need a Graphics Card?

This depends on how often you lot’ll be using your PC for tasks that can take advantage of it.

If you’re focusing more on CAD-based applications, then you may be amend off going with a workstation-blazon graphics menu, a Quadro or Firepro, than a gaming graphics menu. This may likewise be your option if you use whatsoever program which can take advantage of CUDA or OpenCL every bit it volition reduce your rendering times.

But, in full general, the less expensive gaming-oriented Radeon and GeForce graphics cards perform admirably and crush the Quadro and Firepro for virtually benchmarks.

Overall, you’ll want to expect at benchmarks for the programs that you utilise and make a pick based on how a graphics carte performs for that specific software.

A Quality T1 Ability Supply

If you lot’re building a good graphics or photograph editing auto, I highly recommend a good power supply. A quality power supply is not only more power-efficient, it’south also safer in the long run.

Considering the costs of your components, this is actually a no-brainer. As well, in a identify where energy costs are high, you’ll quickly make back the departure.

Recommendation:
Right at present I’d recommend you go with the EVGA SuperNova 550W or 650W models. These requite y’all a slap-up quality option that’s affordable besides.

Future-Proofing and Upgrading Your Editing PC

Equally I handle rendering, photo editing, and video editing every day, I upgrade the hardware on my PC regularly. The actress performance saves me a lot of time, coin, and headaches in the long run.

While in that location certainly isn’t anything you lot can do to time to come-proof your PC entirely, upgrading your motherboard and CPU or graphics card may exist something you’ll want to do on occasion.

Nonetheless, for those that truly demand the operation that new applied science regularly brings, you may opt for selling your previous PC and building a new one altogether. Even if I’ve upgraded my editing PC, I tend to do this every few years.

Putting Together Your PC

Putting all the parts together is elementary equally long every bit you’re sure they’re compatible. Once your parts get in, y’all’ll meet the motherboard and how about of the process is plug and play. It really is that simple.

If you lot need aid, I recommend you lot grab a friend or watch a few YouTube videos to cover whatsoever questions you lot may have. Y’all can also ask me any questions yous may have beneath.

Final Thoughts

These builds are what I’d recommend based on your budget. That being said your needs might differ from the typical photo or video editors.

If you lot accept any questions, I’g more than happy to help you in the annotate department beneath as soon equally I tin.

I’ve mentioned the builds I recommend by upkeep above. No matter what, if you’re getting this congenital for you lot, I’d become with the newer platforms (AMD Ryzen AM4+ or Intel Java Lake Z370).

The eighth generation Java Lake CPUs area vastly improved over the previous generation every bit they typically include an additional 2 cores for the price. Ryzen, actually gave AMD something competitive and anything prior to information technology wouldn’t be worth its table salt right at present.

And then, stick with the new and you should get something that will last y’all quite a while. As far as upgrading, I find I can brand it several years without worrying nigh that likewise much equally long as I give myself a decent enough budget up forepart. That beingness said it’s impossible to know exactly what will come out in the futurity that will dethrone the current tech. Will it be something you lot can incorporate into this organisation? I rarely utilise some furnishings from Trapcode suite or Element 3D etc. In Vegas I use typical build-in transitions, sometimes ProType Titler.

I think in terms of GPU it’s worth mentioning that I’g planning to buy 2560×1440 monitor, almost likely Dell U2715H (I saw that you too recommend it, so that’s awesome).

In that instance, would RX480 4GB be enough?? 480 has college memory clocks and at the moment price difference between 470 4GB & 480 4GB is just around $13 in my local store.

Brandon Hart (writer)
from The Game on March 17, 2017:

In terms of the GPU in After Effects, it’s somewhat express to the 3D Ray Traced Return Engine and OpenGL preview. Quality Ram and a good Processor is more important for AE.

For rendering, yous’ll take to decide how much GPU y’all need (make sure you enable GPU acceleration). Conspicuously the ameliorate the GPU and CPU in this situation, the shorter your render times (but at that place are diminishing returns). I don’t believe VRAM at this level is much of an event in Sony Vegas from what I’ve read. So, I’d likely get with the RX 480 or even the 470 as it’s considerably cheaper. If you have a pretty general workload simply having a mainstream GPU in many cases, is good enough.

GPU Usage is crucial in certain types of workloads. So, it might exist a good idea to check out some benchmarks in what you lot do the about and get with that. For power, I’m e’er tempted to get to the next option up. Y’all’re fine without it if you don’t add much in the future. Continue in mind that your PC won’t be running anywhere most the max load typically. But, it depends on if yous want that absorber or not.

G.Skill 2x8GB 3200MHz

240GB GoodRAM Iridium PRO SSD

2TB WD Bluish

SilentiumPC 550W Enduro FM1 (with 80 PLUS Gilt cert)

A few questions:

i. Is this 8GB GPU an overkill for rendering and 4GB version would exist plenty? Again, I’m not a gamer, I’m simply not sure how much GPU is affecting rendering. Always thought that CPU and RAM is the about crucial.

two. Amend to go with AMD or Nvidia for this usage? If I would utilise merely Adobe products, I would definitely go for Nvidia and CUDA back up, only I’m looking for the all-time balanced solution for these 2 programs.

iii. Is 550W plenty? I used PSU calc and it says Load Wattage: 438 W and recommended 488W. There is some overhead, but I don’t desire the fan spinning as well fast about of the fourth dimension. Should I consider 650W?

Cheers in advance!

Greetings 🙂

Jose,

That really depends on what you exercise. Evidently M.2 is faster but yous may non e’er notice it if the SSD is already proficient plenty. Make sense?

Great data. But I like to ask yous if is worth it but a lot expensive M.2 unit. Like Samsung EVO 960 500 GB. For 260$. The performance information technology’s actually better?

And most the software. Windows ten is amend selection vs windows 7? I recall the software rest power to the great components

Cheers for your awesome data! I have an older Velocity Micro with an Intel i7 860@2.8GHz and Nvidia Geforce GTS 250 graphics…..Yes,I know it’s a dinosaur, only it still works with idiosyncrasies ;-). I don’t practise games, but my chief purpose is photo & possibly video editing. I only bought a BenQ BL2420pt qhd monitor and realize I need to upgrade my graphics card &/or motherboard for information technology’s total potential.

I’ve been researching latest Kaby lake, graphics and MB’s. Hither’s what I’g thinking: GIGABYTE GA-X99P-SLI (rev. 1.0) LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/due south USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard or ASUS X99-M WS mATX Dual Intel LAN with M.2/USB 3.1/ 3T3R Wi-Fi Onboard Workstation Motherboard and the Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake Quad-Core 4.ii GHz LGA 1151 91W BX80677I77700K Desktop Processor. Looking at the processor, the graphics it has supports more than than my current bill of fare. I exercise have a limited budget ($1000) but I’d like to take advantage of latest engineering science for the future. I’d also install my Samsung 850 500 Gb ssd to run Os. I realize this is more than I need, but I’d rather bite the bullet now than upgrade in 2 years. Whatsoever thoughts are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This is very helpful. All I want to do is make blu rays of my habitation-made movies.

If I went with the $1000.00 machine, is there a video editor you’d recommend (does information technology come with blu ray called-for ability, or is that something else I would need to buy).

I’m wondering what other expenses I will run into. I don’t need a fancy monitor (tin I apply my HDTV every bit a monitor?).

And I have no intention of using this computer for internet browsing. I just want to make blu rays with information technology. Can I avoid ever connecting to the internet, or is that required to activate software?

What am I likely to spend, in full, in order to start making blu rays of my adventures? And practise you think that modern software will recognize my Sony FX1 (mini DV)?

Thanks,

Kevin

RAID is possible with using 2 SSD drives – then in that location you lot get more than speed for both – system and applications on one side and scratch on other side.

What if y’all want to utilize information technology for 3d rendering? And a 3k budget.
