Best micro lens for insect photography

2

Bought this lens when I owned my terminal film SLR the Nikon F100.

Later on going on to own the D200, D300s and at present the D500 the Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 200mm f/4D ED-IF has been fantastic and used for about 90% of my macro photography after showtime owning the Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/ii.8D.

The only downside is the the old tech AF which although still capable is non as responsive as silent wave VR lenses for shots like dragonflies in flight. Having used this lens for over 20 years and with the lens beingness discontinued and very unlikely to be relaunched in F mount with AFS and VR I now have the nikkor 105mm AFS two.8 VR paired with the TC-20E iii to become a similar focal length. Not had a chance to test the combination in the field but AF performance in adept lite is no worse than the 200mm Micro and the VR might improve success rates.

For a most 25 yr old lens the Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 200mm f/4D ED-IF  is withal fantabulous, especially in manual focus and on a monopod and will still be used for years to come.
