Canon EF-South xviii–55mm IS II vs III

Any differences optical or otherwise (apart from IS) between the two models of this lens?

Be careful hither. There are (at least) six versions of the EF-S 18-55:

  • EF-Southward xviii-55 f/3.5-5.6 (otherwise unlabeled, the original)
  • EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 Ii
  • EF-S eighteen-55 f/iii.5-5.6 3
  • EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS
  • EF-South 18-55 f/3.5-five.half dozen IS 2
  • EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

Of those, the unlabeled and (non-stabilised) Two version are definitely to be avoided due to the poor image quality. The IS, IS 2 and Three take the same improved optical design, although evidently without the stabilization in the Iii model (which was your original question :-)). The IS STM is the best of the lot, if nothing else due to the non-rotating forepart element.

That all said, the typical cost premium for the IS models over the non-IS is and then small I don’t think I’d ever recommend someone ownership the non-stabilized version.

Are y’all saying that the III has an IS unit of measurement with no motor driving information technology – a weird possibility – or only that the III has an optical design improved from the original/Ii, merely different from the optical design of the IS versions?

I believe it’s essentially the one-time (simply I’g no skillful on lens design) – see eg this post on photography.stackexchange.com which compares the block diagrams of the two.
