At that place are two versions of the Canon 50mm f/1.8 – the quondam “MkII” version and the new STM version.  The old lens has a 52mm filter thread, the STM has a 49mm filter thread.

Personally I would recommend confronting buying a UV filter, especially a cheap UV filter, since IMHO a lens hood does a much improve task of protecting the lens and also has a useful optical function – it reduces flare.  Others on this forum do recollect that a protective filter can be useful, especially in farthermost circumstances like blowing sand, but they would also advise you lot that if y’all do want a protective filter, to buy a good i.

Note that lens hoods don’t normally spiral into the filter threads except possibly the collapsible rubber lens hoods.  Catechism has a lens hoods for the both versions of the lens, ES-62 for the MkII and ES-68 for the STM, just you may find cheaper ones via google.

Annotation that lens hoods don’t ordinarily screw into the filter threads except perhaps the collapsible rubber lens hoods. Canon has a lens hoods for the both versions of the lens, ES-62 for the MkII and ES-68 for the STM, but you lot may find cheaper ones via google.

yes,
don’t
put a UV filter on the 50mm ane.8 (any version)

the 50mm (whatsoever version) is good for portraits, the newer STM version is better than the older ones (except Fifty)

Let me humbly direct y’all to DPR’s lens database. The lens is 69mm in diameter and has a 49mm filter thread. It was like four clicks.

Re: What is the diameter of Canon 50mm f1.viii STM?

Regarding the cheaper alternatives for catechism lens hood for my 50mm 1.8 STM…

I have read the reviews say that the hood rotates with the lens. Is that truthful? Will it rotate even if I buy Catechism’s original hood?

To brainstorm with, is it bad that the hood is rotating with the lens during autofocus?

If it is ok and if the catechism’s official hood also does that, then I will but become ahead purchase the cheaper alternative.
