How To Read Sekonic Light Meter

By | 21/08/2022

1.
Set the calorie-free meter to the
Exposure Index (EI)
of the moving picture you are using.
[a]
Y’all volition find this on the box the motion picture comes in, abbreviated E.I.Exposure Index (EI)
is also known as
A.South.A.
or
I.S.O.
All three are really the same. Notation that there is a different Exposure Index for indoors (with the calorie-free bulb symbol) and for outdoors (with the sunday symbol). For colour motion-picture show a daylight or tungesten conversion filter might also have to be used.

2.
Agree the light meter directly in front of the subject with the sphere
[b]
pointed at the camera.

iii.
Depress the eye button
[c]

4.
The needle
[d]
will be released and move to a reading on the foot candle scale
[e]. (Note that there are f-stops marked in red on this scale also.
Exercise not
employ these to set your lens, as they have no correlation to the film speed.) If you a
re out-of-doors on a vivid solar day the needle will likely pivot at the acme of the scale. Yous will have to utilise the
HIGH Slide
to have your reading. The Loftier Slide will lower the corporeality of calorie-free by v stops. The HIGH Slide is located in a metal pocket on the back of the meter. To use information technology, put it in the slot on top of the meter so it is behind the sphere.

5.
You now turn the punch of the calorie-free meter then that the pointer
[f]
lines up with the number on the foot candle scale above. If the reading is betwixt numbers on the foot candle scale
[e], try to be accurate every bit far every bit the percentage in a higher place or below the number.

Exist careful that you don’t modify the Exposure Index
[a]
when y’all turn the dial.

Importantly, if you are using the
Loftier Slide
then line up the number to the cherry arrow marked with an “H”
[g]
which stands for Loftier Slide.

6.
At present look at the bottom of the dial. Here you will find the i/sec scale
[h]
and the f-stop scale
[i]. There is a carmine line indicating i/50th of a second. Because the
Reflex Bolex
viewfinding system takes away some lite, it is all-time to
open up
and extra 2/3rds of a stop from the reading at 1/50th. This can also exist done by reading for 1/80th of a 2d (in that location is no 1/80th on the ane/sec. calibration, you’ll just take to estimate).

7.
The f-stop reading
[i]
directly across from 1/80th of a second
[h], or 1/50th opened 2/3rds of a finish, is what y’all utilise to set the f-stop on the photographic camera lens. While the meter does not include a shutter speed of i/eighty of a 2nd on the punch you can use the “0” in one/60th for making the reading at ane/80th of a second. If the reading is between stops, try to be accurate as far every bit the pct above or below the finish.

Y’all are now gear up to shoot.

Note: If you lot are filming fast or dull motion your shutter speed will be effected. You tin use the cine scale
[j]
to take your reading. Exist certain y’all recall to also recoup for the Bolex viewfinder (see stride 6).
