Not bad, because I

Apple tree iPhone 11 Pro Max, one.54mm ultrawide camera (13mm equivalent) at f/two.4 at ane/285 at Machine ISO xx (LV xiii.0). bigger.

The iPhone 11 Pro is amazing at how it handles both shadow and highlight, all by itself. Back when I shot large-format film, information technology was nearly incommunicable to get annihilation other than pitch black where the iPhone shows explicit item in the shadows in the much darker foreground.

Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, 4.25mm (26mm equivalent) ultra-wide camera at f/i.viii at ane second handheld at Automobile ISO iii,200, automatic Night Style (LV -3.3). bigger.

When I was a kid, astrophotography was a drag. I’d attach my Minolta SR-i (self-portrait from 1974 at historic period 12) to the back of my 60mm × 700mm Tasco (unguided altazimuth) telescope, make a long exposure, and a week later on become nothing dorsum simply bare flick.

This time, I pointed my one-time Bushnell Spacemaster Two 25× 60mm spotting scope at the comet after I establish it with myLEICA TRINOVID 10 × l BN binoculars, then as a goof, held my iPhone 11 Pro Max behind the scope in the air every bit information technology made a magic, automatic time-sliced and motion-compensated exposure.

Holy, cow, information technology worked! I just held it, and it made a precipitous exposure even though my hands were moving Shot in the native Apple tree Photographic camera app,

Information technology took longer to write this than it did to shoot information technology.

Christmas Eve Luminarias

Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, 4.25mm (26mm equivalent) ultra-wide photographic camera at f/i.8 at 1/2 2nd handheld at Auto ISO 800, automatic Night Style (LV -0.4), Perfectly Clear. bigger or total-resolution.

Bedroom by moonlight

I kid you not: I was awakened by the setting total moon well before dawn. I held up my iPhone 11 Pro Max from bed and fabricated a snap. PERFECT! The band of white lite on the carpet in the center lesser of the paradigm is moonlight. This iPhone amazes me; I don’t even have to be awake to take great photos!

The Milky Way, Shot on iPhone

The Galaxy, Bridgeport, California, seven:34PM, 22 October 2019. iPhone xi Pro Max, 4.25mm (26mm equivalent) ultra-broad photographic camera at f/1.eight at one second (30 second composite time exposure mode tripod-mounted with XUMA MTA-300B Tripod Adapter) at Auto ISO 12,500 (LV -v.4). bigger or make full screen.

While the remainder of our grouping on last week’south trip frantically fiddled with mirrorless and DSLR settings in the cold and pitch-black night, all I did was shoot this in the fourth dimension exposure way of my iPhone, lighten it a fleck subsequently in Photoshop CS6, and voilà, the iPhone 11 Max Pro eats some other segment of what phones didn’t used to be able to practise. Better than the time exposures on the “real” cameras, the iPhone even compensated for the rotation of the earth that leads to blurred stars in the other shots. (see also How to Shoot the Milky way with quondam cameras.) I got results almost equally skillful hand-belongings; the tripod mountain allow me set thirty seconds of accumulation rather than merely 10 seconds.

30-second exposures with the Fuji GFX100 and GF 50mm f/iii.5 were too blurry; you need an astronomical clock drive (or the iPhone’south clever compensated intelligent accumulation fashion) to go rid of the blur from the globe’southward rotation.

If you don’t desire such a long, skinny image or such a wide view, simply end the panorama earlier you turn every bit far, like this epitome:

Yosemite Valley View Panorama

Night style works! I have other shots under only moonlight hand-held, and it’s crazy! This is a lot more colorful than the purely moonlit shots, and in this shot you can run across the cool moonlight glinting off the tile roof — manus-held! I remember how on moving picture this all took a tripod and a load of patience and bracketing trying to compensate for reciprocity failure and the fact that light meters wouldn’t read in light this night. Now I tin grab these as I’m walking along; how things chage in 50 years.

It’s astonishing how the iPhone magically controls vivid and dark areas to make natural-looking photos nether but virtually any condition. In this case the iPhone applies HDR all past itself instantly and just makes the moving picture wait great, without needing any extra lighting. Real estate agents rejoice; you now tin shoot your own listing photos, and the new ultra-ultrawide 13mm camera makes interior spaces and outdoor areas look much larger than about lenses used past the guy you used to have to hire to shoot these.

iPhone xi Pro Max, one.54mm (13mm equivalent) ultra-wide camera at f/ii.4 at 1/369 at Auto ISO 20 (LV xiii.4), Perfectly Clear. bigger or fill screen.

The iPhone magically gets slap-up detail in both the sunlit and shadow areas, and the ultra-ultrawide 13mm camera has about unlimited depth-of-field to keep everything sharp from near to far.

Stairs and Palm

The 13mm ultra-ultrawide camera is so broad that you’ll run across the darker polarization band in the sky around sunset and sunrise considering the camera includes so much of the sky! In this photo the dominicus is setting on the correct and the darker polarized band is at 90º from the sunday in the center of the photograph.

Fountain

Fountain, 22 September 2019.
iPhone 11 Pro Max, cropped from 6mm (52mm equivalent) tele photographic camera at f/2 at 1/two,817 at Auto ISO xx (LV 15.8), Perfectly Clear. bigger or fill-screen.

There is a time exposure manner if you lot want mistiness, and otherwise the iPhone usually shoots at loftier shutter speeds to freeze activeness for the sharpest photos.

Red Adirondack Chairs

Ruby-red Adirondack Chairs, 22 September 2019.
iPhone 11 Pro Max, 1.54mm (13mm equivalent) ultra-broad camera at f/2.4 at one/122 at Auto ISO 64 (LV ten.1), Perfectly Clear. bigger or as-shot, full-resolution file.

Real Estate Listing ULTRAPAN, 24 September 2019.
iPhone 11 Pro Max, one.54mm (13mm equivalent) ultra-broad photographic camera swept panorama at f/two.iv at 1/120 at Automobile ISO 160 (LV 8.76), Perfectly Clear. bigger or full-resolution ULTRAPAN.

You can do ULTRAPAN photos that prove upward to about 270º horizontally, and with the 13mm camera you can see more than ever vertically in the PANO mode. It’south now easy to show an entire interior in one shot if you like. You lot also can do shorter pans of any angle.

Meliorate than I could always exercise with my rotating-lens panoramic picture show cameras, the iPhone magically compensates the lighting then nosotros tin can see outdoors and indoors, and information technology all comes out looking as it did to our eyes. To those of the states who grew upwards shooting pic this is even more impressive, as nosotros know cameras never used to show things the way they await to our optics in harsh low-cal. Apple is doing a lot of very clever things to make iPhone photos expect natural.

Red 2012 Ferrari California Engine

2012 Ferrari California 4.three Litre Engine, 29 September 2019.
iPhone 11 Pro Max, iv.25mm (26mm equivalent) camera at f/1.8 at i/30 at Auto ISO 640 (LV 3.nine), exactly as shot. bigger or full-resolution file.

One of the many things we all dearest well-nigh the iPhone is how information technology always gets colour and exposure just right. Most cameras would see all the black, and burnish the image so much that the scarlet intake runners would wash-out to orange, but the iPhone just nails it. Bravo!

Red 2012 Ferrari California Hood

Hood, 2012 Ferrari California two+2 in Rosso Corsa Carmine 322, 29 September 2019.
iPhone 11 Pro Max, 4.25mm (26mm equivalent) photographic camera at f/1.8 at one/1,546 at Auto ISO 32 (LV 13.9), Perfectly Clear. bigger or full-resolution file.

The darker “seven” on the hood is from the reflections lighting the hood.

iPhone xi Pro Max, one.54mm (13mm equivalent) ultra-wide camera at f/2.4 at 1/470 at Car ISO 20 (LV thirteen.7), Perfectly Clear. bigger or full-resolution file.

Mercedes AMG GLE 63S Coupe in the service bay

Mercedes AMG GLE 63S Coupe in der Werkstatt, 01 Oktoberfest 2019.
iPhone eleven Pro Max, 1.54mm (13mm equivalent) ultra-broad camera at f/ii.four at 1/122 at Auto ISO 100 (LV nine.5), Perfectly Clear. bigger or full-resolution file.

This is an example of a bad photo but trying to “get information technology all in.” The automobile is likewise pocket-sized and looks lost in the service bay considering with a lens this wide, yous accept to get much closer to make a bully picture.

Poolside Fire Dancer

Fire Dancer, 05 October 2019.
Cropped from only a central 5MP of the original 12 MP iPhone 11 Pro Max image, shot with the iv.25mm (26mm equivalent) camera at f/ane.viii at 1/vii of a second hand-held at Automobile ISO 1,250 (LV 0.9), Perfectly Articulate. bigger or full-resolution as-shot uncropped file.

Information technology’due south amazing how well the iPhone works in low light, and I haven’t fifty-fifty shown anything with the new Dark Mode yet. Fire dances are impossible to shoot, and this is the best shot I’ve ever gotten. We weren’t expecting this at the political party and my hands were full of drinks I was bringing from the other side of the pool, so I shot this with my other hand and without having the time to become close enough. Even cropped at high ISO in the dark the iPhone 11 looks great!

To make a fourth dimension lapse, go to the Camera app, swipe to the right near the shutter button where it says PHOTO until you get to the TIME LAPSE option, then printing the shutter and walk away. Press the shutter again when yous’re washed, and that’s it! This works best with the camera on some sort of support or tripod mount; I used the XUMA MTA-300B Tripod Mount Adapter.

Charging

While it comes with a new hot-rodded 18W 5V-3A/9V-2A universal 100~240VAC 50/60Hz USB-C charger and USB-C to lightning cord, it charges with all the same lightning cords and docks we’ve used since the iPhone 5 of 2012.

It also charges great with the same $17 wireless charging stand I’ve used with my iPhone Xs Max since last year. I beloved this wireless charging stand because my telephone is upwards and easy to catch or see from my nightstand or desk all day or nighttime.

Calling up the Camera

Wake up the iPhone to show the Lock Screen.

Either concur the camera icon a moment until yous feel a click and release, or swipe from right to left to open up the camera.

Movies & Burst Way

A new way of shooting movies is simply to agree downwardly the shutter button until the moving-picture show starts.

This used to trigger the Burst mode that shot at ten still frames per 2d. Now Burst mode is triggered by holding the shutter and immediately swiping left.

Forcefulness 3D Affect

Force (3D) touch has gone away, replaced by “Haptic” feedback touch.

Haptic means you lot feel something.

What nosotros used to practice by pressing harder is now done simply by pressing a tiny bit longer until nosotros feel a click (that’south the haptic feedback), and releasing immediately.

Cases

I always use a case.

I’ve dropped all my older iPhones on concrete a few times by accident, and even crashed and broken multiple bones with my iPhone in my pocket, and in every instance my iPhone survived without a scratch.

The photographic camera lenses poke out from the dorsum, and they are protected by very hard optical material not likely to scratch. I don’t worry and have never had a problem simply dropping my iPhone in my pocket all the time.

The leather instance I use is thick enough to shield the protruding lenses when I put my iPhone down on a apartment surface. I presume simply about every instance should practise this and protect the lenses from apartment and/or crude surfaces.

The iPhone xi Pro Max tin shop images and videos either using the newest and most efficient coding algorithms (HEIC for pictures) which take less storage space for the same not bad quality, or store them the usual mode so that everyone can actually see and edit and view the images everywhere – merely they take more storage space in the iPhone.

I prefer the newer formats for in-iPhone storage (Settings > Photographic camera > Formats > Loftier Efficiency), and when I download in my Mac’southward Image Capture app, it magically converts movies to MOV and images to JPG so I can edit them. As well when sharing photos, they always share as JPGs then people can see them. Only when I AirDrop photos in High Efficiency practice they arrive equally HEIC, which on a Mac I open in Preview and save-out as JPGs.

If and just if I’m shooting 4K video, I instead chose Settings > Camera > Formats > Virtually Compatible, which stores my 4K videos in a larger file format, but saves me having to look for Image Capture (or AirDrop) to convert the files to a usable format. Thus by shooting in Almost Compatible the files are saved and ready for me to download and edit, and saves me considerable time waiting for fat video files to convert otherwise.

I make sure to reset to Settings > Photographic camera > Formats > High Efficiency equally soon equally I’ve finished my 4K shooting.
