A Review of the Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S for Nikon SLR Film Cameras

As a young photographer back in the eighties the Nikkor 50mm f/1.four AI-S was a lens I was hoping that, one day I would become my hands on. There was something magical about that fast f/i.iv f-end. The sheer amount of glass they could fit in this lens was awe-inspiring for a immature photography nerd. I was convinced, that if you had this lens, surely yous would become a better photographer.

I have already featured sample images from the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-South in reviews of the Nikon FM2n, Nikon FM3a, and Nikon F3 but wanted to wrap up with my thoughts about this iconic lens and feature fifty-fifty more sample images. I take also written an article on using the Nikkor 50mm f/i.four AI-S on Fujifilm X cameras.

Nikkor 50mm f/one.4 AI-S – Introduction

Even though the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-Southward dates dorsum to 1981 you can still purchase information technology today (new B&H), for $469.95, and a quick check at B&H Photo reveals the following bulletin; “More on the fashion”, telling me, this lens is still in need.

I bought my copy of the Nikkor 50mm f/i.4 AI-South on the local used market place for $120.00 and it offers terrific value for the money spent. The lens is also widely available on east-Bay and often bundled with Nikon SLR cameras. This lens has been a very popular pick for Nikon cameras for decades, hence the supply is quite skilful.

Nikkor 50mm f/ane.4 AI-Due south – Handling and Build Quality

The Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-Due south is a manual focus lens with a smooth focus ring and the aperture is adjustable in total stops. The lens has 7 elements in 6 groups with 7 diaphragm blades and a filter bore of 52mm, which is a standard with a long listing of Nikkor lenses from this era.

Weighing in at 8.69 oz / 246.4 thousand and dimensions of 2.5 x 1.6″ / 63.5 ten 40.6 mm in my book the Nikkor 50mm f/1.four AI-S is a perfect size and information technology never feels beefy or cumbersome to conduct around. The focus ring is big enough that you never struggle to observe it and the rubberized grooves make information technology easy to adapt focusing. The minimum focusing distance is 1.48″ / 45 cm.

The Nikkor 50mm f/1.iv AI-S is an accented joy to work with. The all-metallic blueprint makes it feel rugged and solid in the hand. My copy is absolutely mint which adds to the enjoyment factor.

Personally, information technology gives me nifty pleasure to acquit around an older lens that still appears equally if new. According to the series number on my lens, it is a late re-create which I estimate to be from around 2004.

Epitome Quality

Sample images in this post are from iii different blackness and white negative film stocks, Ilford Delta 100, Ilford HP5 Plus, and Kodak TRI-X 100. I rarely shoot the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S at f/1.iv but probably should try it more than.

Nailing authentic focus gets trickier at f/1.4 and I do find it rather soft. I most often shoot information technology from f/2 and upwardly and find the images rather pleasing. Photos are perhaps non clinically sharp merely have a nice graphic symbol.

Depending on your monitor size you tin view my sample images up to 2500 pixels wide. Please see more sample images below and click to view larger images.

Nikkor 50mm f/1.four AI-S – Conclusion

The Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/ane.four AI-S is a real classic. In the interest of trying to review other Nikkor lenses, I recently put it up for sale simply somewhen regretted the determination. When taking a second await at the lens and the images I have made with information technology I realized what a gem it is, and you get all that for $120.00.

As a reviewer, I inevitably go through a lot of gear. I buy and sell in order to effort more than cameras and lenses. My goal has never been to be a collector but once in a while you come up across a lens or a camera that promises longevity and if you sell them, chances are, you volition regret it.

You never know merely for at present, I am hanging onto the Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/one.4 AI-Due south.
