In the review, I will call the Sigma 19mm one: 2.8 DN A (Art) lens in abbreviated form –
Sigma 19 / two.viii Art.
This review shows the lens version for Sony cameras with mount
Sony Due east
Sigma 19 / 2.8 Art
also available for Micro four/three mirrorless cameras.
Information technology’s of import: there is a similar older lens
Sigma 19mm 1: 2.viii EX DN.
The Sigma 19 / 2.8 Fine art is a wide-angle lens for mirrorless cameras with Sony E mountain and Micro 4/3 mountain. It has a low cost tag, meaty size, fast focusing motor and skilful optical performance. Of the obvious shortcomings, I can highlight the weak resolution in the corners and edges of the frame at F / 2.8 and the dirty focusing band.
The Sigma nineteen / ii.eight Fine art is one of the most affordable lenses in the Sigma Art line. At the time of announcement, the lens was priced at only $ 199.
Sigma 19 / 2.8 Fine art is a practiced alternative for original Sony E 2.8 / sixteen и Sony Due east 2.8 / 20.
January 10 2012
the lens was introduced
Sigma 19mm 1: 2.viii EX DN
for Sony E, Micro iv/three mounts.
January 29 2013
the Sigma nineteen / 2.8 Fine art lens (from this review) for Sony E, Micro 4/iii mounts was presented.
Very important! Lenses Sigma 19mm one: 2.8 EX DN and Sigma 19 / two.8 Art utilise the same optical design, the same MTF graphs, accept the same minimum focusing distance, number of aperture blades, etc. In fact, the Sigma xix / 2.viii Art is a unproblematic upgrade from an older Sigma 19mm 1: 2.eight EX DN.
Main technical characteristics of Sigma 19mm i: ii.eight DN A:
|Review Case Proper name||The lens butt bears the following markings: 0.2M / 0.66feet-∞ Made in Japan Sigma 19mm i: 2.8 DN ø46 A + serial number

Other fixes from Sigma Fine art usually have a much larger aperture ratio than i: 2.eight.
Assembled only in Nippon.
The Sigma 19 / ii.viii Art is modest and lightweight, perfect for Sony NEX / Alpha and Micro 4/3 compact mirrorless cameras. True, for example, the original pancakes for Sony East – Sony E two.8 / xvi и Sony E 2.eight / xx much smaller Sigma 19 / 2.8 Art.
The lens uses small 46mm filters. The Sigma 19 / 2.8 Art is 1 of the smallest lenses in the Sigma ART series. For the dimensions of some of the other Sigma ART lenses I have prepared small video on your Youtube channel.
The focusing ring does not accept a condom insert, it is wide, glossy, and easily gets dingy. The part of the lens closer to the mount is more matte. At kickoff it is difficult to know if the Sigma 19 / ii.eight Art has a focus ring at all.
bayonet, simply non weatherproof.
On the body there is only a bayonet mount mark and a mark for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a pocket-sized plastic hood that locks into grooves nearly the front lens of the lens. The hood tin be installed in the reverse direction for transportation. The hood has a grooved ring that makes information technology easier to dispense.
The diaphragm consists of 7 blades; at all aperture values, a adequately round aperture is obtained.
Overall build quality is
at a high level.
Information technology’s important: Sigma 19 / two.eight Fine art is bachelor in blackness and silverish torso colors.
To focus, the lens uses a special
linear focus motor.
Very of import: parts of the linear motor, and possibly the inner lens grouping, which is responsible for focusing, hang freely on the off camera (or without information technology at all). In that location may be an impression that something is broken in the lens. It looks like loose lens dangling some Sigma lenses with a built-in paradigm stabilizer, where the stabilizing lens group is not suspended in the magnetic field when the camera is turned off and also dangles freely. But equally soon as you turn on the camera, in the middle of the Sigma 19 / 2.8 Art the knocking disappears. This is normal behavior.
The motor is very serenity during autofocus. Automobile focus speed is fast. The focusing speed is sufficient for comfortable piece of work in most photographic tasks.
With a camera Sony a3500 there were no problems with focusing. The lens worked quickly and accurately. Only in the near difficult situations the camera could not perform the correct focusing.
It’due south important: The focusing speed depends very much on the camera used. For example, with a budget camera Sony a3500 this lens focuses quickly but is very uncertain due to the contrast-only focusing method.
The focusing ring is electronic, in transmission focusing mode it rotates very smoothly and for a long time, it is very hard to determine the angle of rotation that performs focusing from MDF to infinity. It is convenient to aim manually. In automobile focus mode, the focus ring does non rotate and yous can agree the lens by it.
has internal focus, the front lens remains stationary during focusing. Optical design and focusing are designed to avoid loss of image quality at dissimilar focusing distances. You can use all kinds of filters without any problems.
The closest focusing altitude is only 20cm and the maximum zoom ratio is 1: 7.4, which is quite skilful for a wide-angle lens.
continuous manual focus command
(Full-Fourth dimension Manual Focus).
- No lens barrel
focus mode switch… Switching should be performed via the camera card or camera controls.
- At that place are no useful cues like focusing altitude. You don’t fifty-fifty know in which direction to rotate the focusing band to focus towards MDF or infinity.
The quality of focusing piece of work of Sigma 19 / 2.8 Art strongly depends on the camera used, also every bit on the organisation used for which the lens is made.
- The Sigma 19 / ii.8 Art has a slight ‘Focus Breathing’ consequence (irresolute the angle of view while focusing). When focusing towards the MDF, the bending of view decreases.
- Focus Shift (focus shift, changing focus altitude due to iris)
The Sigma 19 / 2.eight Fine art is a third political party lens. It may happen that it will not work correctly with some cameras.
The Sigma 19 / ii.eight Fine art was released in early 2013, when in that location were already 24 MP APS-C cameras on sale, and therefore, most likely, the lens was immediately designed to work on sensors with a loftier pixel density. 20 megapixels on my cropped photographic camera with APS-C sensor does not cause any particular problems.
The Sigma 19 / 2.8 Art exhibits moderate optical imperfections. There are chromatic aberrationthat are significant at the edges of the frame. In that location is also vignetting effectually one finish at F / 2.8, as well as a little distortion. In the middle of the frame at F / 2.8 the lens is very sharp, but in the corners of the frame on APS-C the situation is not adept. Overall edges and corners are better than original Sony E 2.8 / 16… Most likely, there will be no significant problems in the corners of the frame on Micro 4/iii cameras. At closed apertures, the lens produces a very sharp epitome as expected, practically over the entire field of the frame.
Many reviews of this lens have been carried out with the Micro 4/3 family cameras, where it performed better than APS-C (less bug in corners and edges at F / 2.viii, less vignetting, aberrations at the edges are not then noticeable).
The Sigma 19 / two.8 Art has a lens contour in popular RAW converters, which makes it easy to automatically right some distortions.
Sample photos on Sony a3500 (APS-C)
Camera used for examples Sony a3500 with EXMOR APS-C CMOS xx MP sensor. All photos are on-photographic camera JPEG. Sony a3500 cannot shoot exclusively in RAW format, but but in RAW + JPEG or JPEG. EGF for Sony Eastward cameras with an APS-C sensor is about 28mm.
RAW source files (‘.ARW’) can be download from this link (13 files, 200 MB).
Sigma 19 / 2.eight Fine art was on my review for a curt fourth dimension and even during the fall bad weather, so I did not have fourth dimension to shoot many shots with this lens.
Typically, all ART lenses have their ain unique optical design, which was calculated precisely taking into account the high requirements of the Sigma Art line. But the Sigma 19 / ii.viii Fine art uses the optical design of the older Sigma EX series lens. It turns out that the Sigma 19 / 2.8 Art is non a real ‘ART lens’. In full general, all 3 Sigma Art DC 19 / ii.8 lenses, 30/2.8, threescore/2.viii very unlike from their fellows. They have a completely unlike case pattern, and still only Sigma Fine art DC xix / 2.8, 30/2.8, 60/2.8 use f / 2.eight, while all other Sigma ART fixes, except the Sigma Fine art MACRO, accept a much larger maximum aperture, which usually ranges from F / 1.2 to F / one.8.
Overall a more compact pancake lens Sony E 2.8 / sixteen I liked it more.
So far, this is the weakest lens in the Sigma Art line that I have shot. But weak does not mean bad. In general, I would non put the ‘ART’ mark on this lens.
In general, I got the impression that the lenses
Sigma Fine art DC
19 / two.8, 30/2.8, 60/2.8 got into this line past accident, and instead of them in that location should be iii lenses with a like focal length
Sigma Gimmicky DC DN
xvi/1.four, 30/i.4, 56/one.iv.
And I also have a question: why Sigma lenses 16/i.4, 30/i.4, 56/1.4 in their name they are marked DC DN (DC – for crop, DN – for mirrorless), at the same time Sigma 19 / 2.8 lenses, 30/2.8, sixty/2.8 in their proper noun they have merely the DN marking.

The Sigma xix / 2.8 Art is an inexpensive, lightweight and fairly meaty wide-angle prime number. A good alternative for original Sony E 2.8 / 16 и Sony East two.8 / 20… Optically, this is a complete copy of the previous version. Sigma 19mm ane: 2.viii EX DN.
10 main advantages:
- good resolution at f / ii.8 in the center of the frame
- compact size, light weight
- low cost (around $ 200 for a new lens)
- fast focusing with linear motor
- very quiet focusing
- internal focusing, fixed focus band during auto focus
- continuous manual focus command, electronic focus ring
- practiced build quality, metallic mount
- the optical pattern uses three aspherical elements
- the lens belongs to the Sigma Fine art line with very loftier image quality and build criteria
10 principal disadvantages:
- the optical pattern is taken from an older Sigma 19mm i: ii.8 EX DN
- strange design, not institute in many other lenses in the Sigma Fine art series
- but 7 aperture blades (typical Sigma ART lenses use 9+ blades)
- for silver version only blackness hood is available
- in that location are no additional marks (focusing distance, depth of field, etc.)
- no built-in prototype stabilizer
- sleeky body parts get muddied hands
- in the off country, the linear motor and / or internal lenses are loose
- difficult to observe on sale
- severe drop in sharpness in the far corners of the frame on APS-C, serious chromatic abnormality in the corners of the frame
