stabilized! Eat that, Sony slackers trying to sell us Chinese-made unstabilized 135/1.8 lenses. Not but does Nikon Z have nothing even remotely close to a 135/1.eight, fifty-fifty their Chinese-made 105mm f/1.4 F-mount dinosaur isn’t stabilized. Nikon discontinued both their AI-s 135mm f/2 and AF 135mm f/2D DC lenses years ago, and neither was always stabilized. Yawn!
This new RF 135mm f/1.viii IS USM should transport in late January 2023, but merely if you lot go information technology ordered today.
I’m so glad I upgraded to Canon back in 2012. All considering Nikon was synonymous with professional photography from the 1960s through the early 2000s doesn’t mean we owe them whatsoever allegiance today with about everything from Nikon seemingly dispensable and offshored to Cathay.
Canon’due south been the number-one selling camera make overall for

Another winner, a mid-sized exercise-everything wink. I gotcha: it only works with the newest cameras with “smart” shoes with multipin connectors; it has no traditional hot shoe terminals and so won’t piece of work on older cameras:

Clearly there is too much going on today for but poor piffling old me to write reams nearly all of these new products, but the 10-T5 is the latest in what I consider to be Fuji’southward best camera. By “best” I mean a Fuji photographic camera I’d really shoot, unlike the pitiful crippled cameras missing half their controls like the GFX-100.
The X-T5 is the latest since the X-T1, Ten-T2, X‑T3 and X‑T4 which are amid Fuji’s most usable, and therefore all-time, cameras. You can pay more than from Fuji, just you get less with other models when Fuji rips out the 4-manner rear controller or some of the dials only to be cute. These controls are not decorations left over from the 1970s; they’re how we command cameras with ane touch rather than several. Bear on functions stink.

Getting the Globe’s Highest-Resolution DSLR
and EF 50mm f/1.2L.
I’ve loved my 50 Megapixel Canon 5DS/R ever since I got mine when it came out in 2015.
No DSLR has higher resolution for my style of nature and landscape photography, nor has any Canon or Nikon mirrorless camera ever exceeded, much less even matched, the 5DS/R’s resolution.
I paid $3,900 for mine back in 2015, and today Catechism is giving them away at $1,500 each, brand new.
Here’s the catch for How to Get One: Information technology’due south and so popular that B&H gets them in and ships them right out to anybody who has them on order,
without ever having enough to park on a shelf to show as “in stock,”
and then just y’all take to place your order and then be patient for information technology to arrive at B&H and be shipped out to you. Just similar everything new and hot, it probably volition never be shown equally “in stock,” while those of united states of america in the know order, wait, and get them while everyone else thinks aught ever shipped.

Sony A7R Five Review.
All Sony Cameras Compared.
I added the A7R V.
In case you lot haven’t seen All Sony Cameras Compared recently, yous’ll detect that it has bodily prices plotted going back to 2016 and then you tin run into how the deals come up and go for each photographic camera.
Sony is weird in that they go along selling their old-model cameras, similar the A7 2 that came out in 2015, even today! That’due south practiced for shooters because today the A7 Two sells for merely $898, downwards from $1,499 when information technology came out.
You also can see how the A7R Iv sold for about $3,498 the past three years, and just dropped to $ii,998 with the introduction of the A7R Five, and since they’re by and large the same camera, you can pocket 900 simoleons by opting for the A7R Four.
Is the A7R 5 worth $900 more the A7R IV? It all depends on how much money you have and if you’d use or detect any of what’s new in (or missing from) the A7R 5. See Is It Worth It to find out.

Sony ZV-1F Vlogging Camera
(also at Adorama).
The ZV-1F is a small-sensored, fixed lens indicate & shoot.
It has no viewfinder.
It has a non-removable, not-zoom 7.6mm f/2 lens (20mm equivalent on total-frame) and a flip screen. It has a small viii.6 10 13.2mm 20 MP sensor. Sony calls it “ane inch,” but it’southward not.
While Sony calls it a “Vlogging” camera, you lot can’t livestream from it directly. Instead, you have to connect information technology to your phone or computer to connect information technology to the Internet — so why not just livestream directly from your iPhone equally I exercise and be on the air without all the hassle of monkeying around trying to set menus, charging more batteries and God knows what else to get it all continued to connect live?
Even a few years agone I had no problem livestreaming directly from my iPhone 11 Pro Max with no other power, connections or gear needed. Its own battery hands let me circulate for
over three continuous hours live from the field
with my iPhone’s ain wireless connection.
Today, my iPhone 14 Pro Max (review coming) has about the aforementioned-sized 7.3 10 9.8mm sensor, a faster half-dozen.7mm (24mm equivalent) f/1.eight lens and has 48 MP, not 20. Most importantly, Apple has a lot more smarts and processing power than Sony. Motion picture quality today is in the firmware and I honestly suspect that the video out of my iPhone is going to wait much better in real life than from this Sony. Of course for selfie vlogging 1 uses the smaller iPhone “forepart” photographic camera, but yous get the thought.
I never need a gimbal while walking and rolling video with my iPhones; their stabilization is amazing (Hint: while rolling the epitome on your screen will bounce around, merely look at the playback and yous’ll be amazed at how y’all merely don’t demand a gimbal to hand-hold tracking shots on iPhone.)
The ZV-1F claims a stabilizer mode, but I can’t say how well information technology works.
I’one thousand certain the ZV-1F will be popular with people who accept Vlogging more seriously than I (which is pretty much everyone over the age of 6), but honestly, I adopt the real-fourth dimension, existent-world convenience of my all-in-ane iPhone — no gimbal, no powerbank and no external gear needed for direct alive streaming. Recall I’m kidding? Become to the YouTube app in iPhone, tap
in the the bottom-heart and tap Go LIVE. Easy.

I just got my RF 15-30mm IS STM in for review and volition be shooting it all over Yosemite next week — watch this space. The great news is that the RF 15-30mm IS STM is super precipitous, as expected. When a lens doesn’t have to be equally fast, information technology’s much, much easier to arrive small-scale, low-cal and inexpensive as well every bit ultra sharp.

Apple Lookout ULTRA.
I’m loving my Apple tree Scout ULTRA. It turns out its biggest force – for me – is that its huge bombardment lets me do many-60 minutes-long workouts each day without having to charge. I workout at to the lowest degree a half hour every day, which is the daily workout elapsing for which Apple rates the regular Watch’south eighteen-60 minutes battery life, however every other day I workout for a few hours, during which the bright green rear LED heart charge per unit sensor drains the bombardment with hours and hours of use.
Only for giggles I was able to let workouts run for about 12 hours the other solar day, and my Apple Sentry ULTRA merely barely covered it all, with continuous heart rate information the whole time. My regular Series Watches could never run workouts that long.
With conventional Series watches I would have to use a low-power conditioning option to have the heart rate sensor measure much less frequently to permit me run for that many hours.
My ULTRA now typically has 65% charge left at the end of each day, even with a couple of hours of workouts.
I e’er have my phone with me; if y’all go out it home and the scout has to use its cellular connectedness, that also runs the battery downwards much more speedily. My older Series watches lost well-nigh 10% of charge per hr if working on cellular without a phone near; I haven’t checked that with my ULTRA yet.
Even if you don’t need the bombardment life, the big, cute Apple Lookout ULTRA is titanium and therefore with its trail loop ring, weighs
(2.475 oz./70.2g total) than my stainless-steel series watches with their stainless-steel Milanese-loop bands (45mm Serial seven: 3.275 oz./ 92.9g total). Unlike my other heavy dive watches, the Apple Watch ULTRA feels weightless, and with its big blackness screen, is a piece of work of fine art.
I was concerned that the ULTRA would be a huge thing on my wrist for daily use as are my dive watches, but it turns out the ULTRA simply disappears. It’s super calorie-free weight and not as big as you lot think, at least compared to a dedicated stainless or contumely dive watch.
While the bodily active paradigm surface area of the ULTRA screen is only near the same size every bit the 45mm Series 7 and 8 screens, the ULTRA has more black area around the screen, so the image floats in beautiful inky blackness rather than being wrapped around the margins of the Series 7 and 8.
All of the 45mm Series seven, 45mm Serial 8 or ULTRA have a much bigger screen than whatever of the Serial vi or before watches. I desire the biggest screen I can get, then any of the 45mm watches or ULTRA are a huge step upwardly from the before ones.

My frozen film is
Mike tells me that most of it has already sold. He has, as of dawn this morning, only eight 5-roll pro-packs of 35mm Velvia 50 left.
People new to the flick renaissance may non realize that back when all we had was film for serious photography that I, like most of u.s.a., would shoot many rolls every day. Nosotros didn’t load a roll and piece of work it for a week; we had no iPhones and we shot information technology all on flick. I’d come up back from a few days out shooting with a dozen or more rolls in a Ziploc handbag to driblet off at the lab.
When I shot film, I shot a lot of film. You lot besides demand to shoot often to stay in do; learning how your meter responds to different situations and the best filter packs to utilize for each kind of lighting takes a lot of trial-and-error since you can’t run into the results immediately. Film shooting is a art to do well.
No fears, I still shoot pic, only nowhere near as much Velvia as I used to. Also annotation that I but unloaded a ton of Velvia, my favorite picture which I overbought. I withal have a freezer total of B&Due west motion picture.
Velvia shows its magic when you look at the moving picture direct on a light table, where yous become more dynamic range, resolution and color gamut directly from the film surface than we tin can from digital displays. Likewise, Velvia is breathtaking when projected directly from our slides. When I would practise slide shows from my medium-format Velvia projected directly from the live picture show that was in my camera, people left incoherent.
Velvia was and notwithstanding is difficult to browse. If you want digital files, I prefer the color rendition I get straight from today’s digital cameras. Velvia is such a dynamic film (Velvia’southward DMAX
is shut to 4.0 log10, pregnant nearly a
dynamic range) that it’south very difficult to scan well on CCD scanners. It actually begs for real photomultiplier tube (PMT) drum scanner to go the scans to be as vibrant and accurate as what we meet looking directly at the living, animate picture itself.
In other words, to love Velvia every bit I ever have, you want to project it, or wait at it on your light table, or view information technology in something great similar the LEICA 5x loupe system 37 350. Care for yourself to a LEICA 35mm slide projector with a LEICA project lens (not
a Kodak Ektragraphic or Carousel; those were e’er awful by comparison with crappy lenses) or a two¼″projector (look for
HASSELBLAD, Rollei or Kindermann), and a real projection screen (non
a sheet or white wall) and savour film the way information technology was intended.
Avoid color print (C-41) film similar Kodacolor or Fujicolor. Its color was always awful, even dorsum when moving picture was all we had. You lot have to shoot slide film to go great color on picture. C-41 has e’er been an apprentice picture; everything shot for publication has always been shot on transparency motion picture, starting with Kodachrome back in the 1930s. C41 was but much easier to turn into prints at the drugstore than press from slides, which was and is e’er been difficult.
While I don’t shoot much, if any, color film anymore, I love B&West film. If my final work is B&Westward, I prefer shooting on film for its greater highlight dynamic range and the fact that converting to B&West from a color digital file doesn’t work well when you start invoking color filters in the color to B&W conversion procedure.
My favorite B&West film is Fuji Acros 100 Two, which has better reddish sensitivity and reciprocity characteristics than TMax 100.

Rockwell’s Doomsday Film Vault
Dorsum when film was on the manner out effectually 2010 I did a lifetime purchase of all the original Velvia and Velvia 50 I’d ever need, in 35mm, 120, 220, 4×5 and 4×five QuickLoad so I’d always have all I need. Velvia was critical to getting my wait as an artist and digital hadn’t caught upward. I bought all I’d ever need and immediately put it all into my deep freezer at 0ºF (-18º C), to be used every bit needed. I was non going to let supply issues hamper my art.
I bought plenty to sustain myself pretty much forever at what was my current usage rate — back in 2010 when I even so shot a lot of film because digital hadn’t caught up.
Digital became pretty good around 2012 when everything went to 24 MP, and I haven’t shot much film ever since — but hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of rolls and sheets of film were nonetheless in my deep freeze that I was never going to utilize.
I put the discussion out, and luckily my friend Mike Ahmadi who lives just exterior of Yosemite National Park wanted near all of it. He’s going to shoot it all, except that I had at least 170 rolls of 35mm Velvia, and Mike doesn’t need that much 35mm.
Mike is keeping all the larger format movie for his ain use, but if you twist his arm he might part with some of information technology. I had hundreds of rolls and sheets of 220 and four×five” which aren’t made anymore. 220 is critical for serious heavy shooting with my medium format cameras (hint: 220 vacuum backs for Contax 645 are cheap at eBay and they use a vacuum to keep film the flattest ever seen in any consumer awarding which y’all can’t get in whatever other format other than 220, and A24 & E24 220 backs for Hasselblad are also really cheap at eBay), and of course four×5″ is critical for serious landscape photography. I saved plenty for my own utilise for all these formats, just I had so, so much extra that I was never going to shoot.
Here’s the good part: Mike has offered to handle selling off what neither of u.s. need. I had no thought I had hoarded so much as I cleaned out three freezers! He’s listed some of it at eBay for $99 a v-roll Pro Pack, and if yous email Mike at
[email protected], you can get them for $75 each pro-pack as Friends-of-Ken. That’s far less than the usual $20 a curlicue people pay on eBay for film with questionable storage history. Of course B&H has all you want for $34 a roll, new ($170 per 5-whorl pro pack).
Just a minor fraction of what I had:
Fuji Velvia 50 in five-roll Pro Packs
(merely 100 rolls shown hither). bigger.
I usually bought Velvia in xx-roll pro packs. They were the all-time as you opened i carton and there were 20 easy-to-grab films in there, no piffling boxes in the fashion. These v-roll packs are for smaller shooters; there are 5 cans in each box merely you have to milkshake them out the end rather than reaching into a big box from the top with the 20-curlicue packs.
Here’due south how I bought 120 and 220 motion picture: 100-roll pro packs:
Fuji Velvia 50 in a 100-curlicue Pro Pack of 120
(I stuck some 220 in there to fill up the box which was missing what I had already shot). bigger.
Non to worry, I however take everything I demand, but no way was I going to shoot 170 rolls of 35mm Velvia. Yep, it keeps great in the deep freeze and Mike has already shot a bunch. Ameliorate become yours before Mike burns through it all! He has his own E6 line so developing is trivial for him at domicile, lucky devil.
Here’southward me with Mike at Yosemite’s Ansel Adams Gallery. Mike is the spitting image of Ansel:
