The
iPhone 7
and
iPhone 7 Plus
[a]
are smartphones that were designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. They are the tenth generation of the iPhone. They were announced on September 7, 2016, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Apple CEO Tim Cook, and were released on September 16, 2016, succeeding the iPhone 6, iPhone six Plus, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus equally the flagship devices in the iPhone series. Apple also released the iPhone seven and iPhone 7 Plus in numerous countries worldwide throughout September and Oct 2016. They were succeeded every bit flagship devices past the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus[17]
on September 12, 2017, and were discontinued with the announcement of the iPhone 11 and iPhone xi Pro on September 10, 2019.

The iPhone vii’due south overall design is like to iPhone 6S and iPhone 6. Changes introduced included new color options (Matte Black and Jet Blackness), water and dust resistance, a new capacitive, static habitation button, revised antenna bands, and the controversial removal of the 3.v mm headphone jack. The device’s internal hardware received upgrades, including a heterogeneous quad-core system-on-chip with improved arrangement and graphics performance, upgraded 12 megapixel rear-facing cameras with optical epitome stabilization on all models, and an additional telephoto lens exclusive to the iPhone 7 Plus to provide enhanced (2x) optical zoom capabilities and portrait fashion. The front end camera is the commencement in the series with 1080p (Full HD) video resolution. The iPhone 7 & 7 Plus are supported from iOS x to iOS 15, and they are the 3rd to support six, and only half dozen, versions of iOS earlier support was terminated, later the iPhone 5S.

History

[edit]

Prior to its announcement, multiple aspects of the iPhone 7 were heavily rumoured. Apple tree’due south plans to remove the 3.5 mm headphone jack received significant media attention.[22]
Other rumors included a flush camera, stereo speakers,[23]
a 256 gigabyte storage selection, and a larger 3,100 mAh battery.[24]

On August 29, 2016, invitations to a press effect at the Beak Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California on September 7, 2016 were sent out to members of the media, prompting firsthand speculation of the iPhone 7’due south upcoming annunciation.[25]
[26]
The iPhone seven was officially announced at that event, with pre-orders beginning September 9, and general availability on September 16.[27]
[28]
[29]

The iPhone 7 launched in 30 new countries later in September, with further international rollouts throughout October and November 2016.[37]
Indonesia was the last country to release the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, with availability starting on March 31, 2017, following Apple tree’s research and evolution investment in the state.[38]

On March 21, 2017, Apple announced an iPhone 7 with a reddish color finish (and white forepart), as part of its partnership with Product Crimson to highlight its AIDS fundraising entrada. It launched on March 24, 2017,[39]
[40]
but information technology was afterwards discontinued afterward the annunciation of the iPhone viii, iPhone eight Plus and iPhone X in September 2017 as well as the 256 GB Variant.[41]

On September 12, 2017, Apple tree announced the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus equally direct successors to the iPhone seven and 7 Plus,[42]
aslope the iPhone X.[43]

The iPhone 7 & 7 Plus, as well equally the iPhone XS and its Max variant were discontinued and removed from Apple tree’s website after the announcement of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro on September 10, 2019. They are no longer available for sale.

On June half dozen, 2022, Apple announced on its website that iPhone vii and 7 Plus volition not receive support for iOS xvi. Controversially the iPad (fifth generation), which has the A9 chip, will receive iPadOS sixteen, forth with the 6th and 7th generation iPads, which have well-nigh identical hardware to the iPhone 7 and 7+ respectively.[44]

Specifications

[edit]

Design

[edit]

Color Name Front Antenna
Black Black Black
Jet Blackness
Silver White Light Grey
Gold White
Rose Gold
(Product) RED Red

The iPhone 7’due south exterior is similar in shape and book to the iPhone half dozen and iPhone 6S, although the photographic camera crash-land is bigger on the iPhone 7. Alongside the existing silver, golden, and rose gold colors, the device is offered in new colors of matte black, glossy “jet black”,[27]
and, for a limited time, red.[39]
[xl]
The “jet blackness” color is a nighttime shade, loftier-gloss black finish. Information technology is created through a multi-step process, start with an anodization phase to make the surface of the casing a porous aluminum oxide, and and then using a machine to sweep the casing through a powdered compound, absorbed by aluminum oxide. The process is concluded with an “ultrafine particle bath” for additional finishing; the entire process takes less than an hour.[45]

Water protection

[edit]

iPhone vii is rated IP67 water and dust resistant, making it the first officially h2o-resistant iPhone,[46]
although tests have resulted in malfunctions, specifically distorted speakers, after water exposure.[47]
The warranty does not cover whatever h2o impairment to the phone.[48]

Home push

[edit]

iPhone seven’south abode button uses a capacitive mechanism for input rather than a physical push-button, as on previous models, pregnant direct skin contact (or a capacitive glove) is required to operate the device.[49]
[l]
Physical feedback is provided via a Taptic Engine vibrator, and the button is also pressure level-sensitive.[51]
iPhone 7 retains the 3D Touch display organization introduced on the iPhone 6S, providing pressure-sensitive touchscreen input.[27]

Headphone plug removal

[edit]

Comparing of ports on iPhone 6/6S (top) and iPhone 7 (lesser)

The iPhone seven and iPhone seven Plus are the first iPhones not to feature a three.5mm headphone jack. It was replaced by a second speaker grille that serves as a vent for the internal barometer.[52]
A Lightning-to-3.5-mm-connector adapter, every bit well every bit in-ear headphones that use the Lightning connector, were bundled with the device,[27]
and the adapter is as well sold separately equally an accessory.[53]
The adapter is also compatible with other iPhone, iPad, and iPod Affect devices running iOS ten and newer.[54]

Hardware

[edit]

Chipsets

[edit]

iPhone 7 uses the Apple A10 Fusion 64-bit system-on-fleck, which consists of two low-power cores and ii high-power cores (only 2 cores are used at whatsoever bespeak in time[55]). The A10 chip as well features a hexa-core graphics fleck capable of “console-level gaming”.[56]
As with prior models, iPhone 7 is available in two sizes: one with a 4.7 in (120 mm) screen, and a “Plus” variant with a 5.v in (140 mm) screen.[57]
The displays take identical sizes and resolutions to iPhone 6S, but with a wider color gamut[27]
and increased brightness.[58]
The screen-to-body ratio is near ~66% and ~68% for the vii and 7 Plus, respectively.[59]
[lx]

Both device variants as well contain a new iteration of Apple’s motion coprocessor, the M10.[61]
Unlike previous iPhone models, internal storage options for iPhone seven begin at 32 GB instead of 16 GB, and max out at 256 GB.[62]
iPhone 7 Plus offers 3 GB of RAM, more any other previous iPhone;[55]
the 4.7-inch iPhone seven has ii GB.[63]

Cameras

[edit]

The iPhone 7 includes a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with a quad-LED “True Tone” flash; its discontinuity was widened to f/1.8, and the standard-size phone model adds optical prototype stabilization – a feature that was previously exclusive to Plus models.[64]

The iPhone 7 Plus includes a 2d 12-megapixel telephoto lens, which can be used to achieve 2× optical zoom, and upwardly to ten× digital zoom. Yet, the telephoto camera has an
f/2.viii discontinuity and lacks optical prototype stabilization.[65]

The iPhone vii and 7 Plus tape video with single-channel mono audio.[66]

Still photos with 6.5 megapixels (3412×1920) tin exist captured during video recording.[67]

The front-facing camera was upgraded to a 7-megapixel sensor with automatic epitome stabilization.[27]
[68]

The iPhone seven and 7 Plus are the first iPhones to be able to tape 1080p video using the front camera.[69]

Battery Life

[edit]

The iPhone 7 has a 1,960 mAh battery which can concluding most three-5 hours. The iPhone 7 Plus has 2,900 mAh battery and can last for 5-viii hours.

Software

[edit]

The iPhone 7 originally shipped with iOS x pre-installed.[70]
The iPhone 7 Plus received an sectional portrait camera mode in the iOS 10.1 software update.[71]
This camera mode is capable of producing a bokeh issue using depth of field analysis of the second camera of dual-lens in the back of iPhone 7 Plus. Mainstream software support for the iPhone 7 was dropped when iOS 16 was released. But, it notwithstanding receives iOS 15 security updates (every bit of 31 Oct, 2022). The last version of iOS to back up iPhone vii is iOS 15.7.[72]
[73]
In June 2022, Apple appear that information technology will drop support for the iPhone seven and 7 Plus with the release of iOS 16.[74]
[75]
The device can also run Android Queen Cake (10.0) unofficially via a project called Project Sandcastle made by Corellium, a security inquiry company.[76]
Ubuntu 20.04 “Focal Fossa” has also been ported via Project Sandcastle.[77]

Accessories

[edit]

Each iPhone 7 originally came with a Lightning-to-three.v-mm adapter,[27]
although this was omitted starting on September 12, 2018.[78]
Apple tree sells the adapter independently equally well.[53]
Apple tree also unveiled several Bluetooth wireless headphones ostensibly intended for utilize with the iPhone 7, including AirPods, wireless in-ear headphones, and 3 new Beats headphone products. All four products utilize an in-business firm wireless fleck known as the Apple tree W1, which is designed to provide low-power Bluetooth operation and integration with iOS and macOS devices (though they are still compatible with other Bluetooth-supported devices).[79]
[80]

Reception

[edit]

Reception of the iPhone 7 was mixed. Although reviewers noted improvements to the camera, peculiarly the dual rear photographic camera on the Plus model, the phone was criticized for the lack of innovation in its build quality. Many reviews panned the removal of the 3.5 mm headphone jack; some critics argued that the change was meant to bolster licensing of the proprietary Lightning connector and the sales of Apple tree’s own wireless headphone products, and questioned the effects of the change on audio quality. Apple was also mocked by critics for Phil Schiller’s statement that such a drastic change required “courage.”

Gordon Kelly of
Forbes
noted that rival smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S7, had increased bombardment life and added h2o resistance over its predecessor while retaining the headphone jack, and that the iPhone 7’due south camera photo quality was improved only still lagging behind some phones already on the market, including the Galaxy S7 and Nexus 6P. Kelly praised how Apple was able to extract improved brightness and accurate color reproduction from its LCD display console, while noting that it was onetime technology which was as well well backside rivals who had already moved to sharper 1080p or fifty-fifty 2K screens. The iPhone seven’s exterior, which reuses the crumbling design of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S, was criticized, particularly the size of the device and thick top/bottom bezels, with Kelly writing that “the iPhone 7 Plus is but far too big for a smartphone with a v.5-inch display”.[81]

Nilay Patel of
The Verge
described the devices as being “full of aggressive breaks from convention” despite their design continuity with previous models (going every bit far as dubbing them “a prototype of next year’s rumored drastic iPhone redesign bearded as an iPhone 6”), citing the headphone jack removal (which he felt was an endeavour to encourage the use of wireless headphones), heterogeneous CPU, and home button redesign. The display quality was considered an improvement over previous models, admitting “not equally insane” as the quad Hard disk displays on competing phones. The Taptic Engine was considered the “kickoff really valuable new UI concept I’ve seen on phones in years” (every bit opposed to the “gimmick” of 3D Touch), Patel felt that the cameras of the devices were a “step” above the 6S in terms of performance, and praised the dual-lens photographic camera on the vii Plus for enhancing the telephone’due south camera functionality. All the same, he panned the lack of editing features that fabricated use of them. In regards to the enhanced Bluetooth audio back up provided past devices containing the W1 bit, he argued that Apple “took away an established open standard in favor of new technologies, but instead of making the experience of using those new technologies amend across the board, it made every third-political party wireless audio production a second-class citizen of the Apple tree ecosystem.” Giving the iPhone 7 a 9 out of x, he concluded that the devices were “legitimately amid the near interesting, opinionated, powerful phones Apple has always shipped, and the most confident expressions of the visitor’s vision in a long fourth dimension. iOS 10 is excellent, the cameras are amend, and the operation is phenomenal. And the batteries last longer.”[82]

John McCann of
TechRadar
wrote that for the get-go fourth dimension, the phablet-sized iPhone seven Plus was “markedly ameliorate” than the smaller model. He highlighted improved battery life and praised the camera, calling the Plus’ dual cameras “first-class” for point-and-shoot, and “much improved” for depression-light performance. McCann wrote that the lack of a headphone jack was “initially frustrating”, only noted that it was a “positive step forwards for the mobile manufacture”, despite the “brusk-term effects … making the nearly dissonance for now”.[83]

Headphone jack controversy

[edit]

Criticism of the iPhone 7 centered around the removal of the headphone jack, including the inability to use wired headphones with the included adapter and accuse the device simultaneously.[b]
[85]

In a peculiarly scathing article, Nilay Patel of
The Verge
wrote that removing the headphone jack, “a securely established standard” as he put it, would be “user-hostile and stupid”. He goes on to list reasons why removing the port is negative, last with “No one is asking for this” and “Vote with your dollars”.[86]

Gordon Kelly of
Forbes
noted that wireless audio technology was immature at the moment, with Bluetooth sound quality existence inferior and Lightning’south audio reliability still in question. The removal of the headphone jack meant that in Patel’southward words, “Yous’re being pushed into an era where you volition accept to pay more for decent headphones due to their need for an integrated DAC and/or Lightning licensing”, and pointed out that “the merely company to profit from this state of affairs is Apple tree, who will now be charging licensing fees to millions of headphone companies”.[81]

In particular, Apple’south vice president Phil Schiller, who appear the change, was mocked extensively online for stating that removing the headphone jack took ‘courage’.[87]
[88]
An online petition created by the consumer group SumOfUs, that accuses Apple tree of planned obsolescence and causing substantial electronic waste past removing the headphone jack,[89]
reached over 300,000 signatures.[90]

Issues

[edit]

Hissing noises (Hissgate)

[edit]

Some users have reported a strange hissing noise during heavy usage of the phone.
CNET
reports it every bit “faint buzzes and hums coming from the backside”.[91]
The Daily Telegraph
speculates that the iPhone 7’s new A10 Fusion processor is the source of the noise, linking to tweets that compare the telephone’s hissing audio to “hearing the fans spin up loudly whenever your Mac’s CPU gets used to its actual potential.”[92]
The issue has been referred to as
Hissgate.[93]
[94]

Operation differences

[edit]

The Guardian
reported in Oct 2016 that storage tests from
Unbox Therapy
and
GSMArena
showed that the 32 GB iPhone 7 is “significantly” slower than the 128 and 256 GB versions, measuring data write speeds of 341 MB/south on a 128 GB iPhone 7 model versus 42 MB/s on a 32 GB model.[95]
October 2016 network tests by
Cellular Insights
showed that models A1660 and A1661 with Qualcomm modems had “a significant performance edge” over models A1778 and A1784 with Intel modems. Inspection of the modems also found that the Qualcomm version’s ability to utilize Ultra Hard disk Vocalism had been turned off, likely to “level the playing field betwixt the Qualcomm, and Intel variants”. The written report concluded with the statement that “We are not sure what was the master reason behind Apple’s decision to source ii unlike modem suppliers for the newest iPhone”.[96]
[97]
Bloomberg
reported in November 2016 that tests past researchers from Twin Prime and Cellular Insights had shown the 2 modems to perform similarly on some U.S. cellular networks despite 1 of the modems being technically capable of faster connectivity. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller told the publication that “Every iPhone seven and iPhone seven Plus meets or exceeds all of Apple’southward wireless performance standards, quality metrics, and reliability testing … In all of our rigorous lab tests based on wireless industry standards, in thousands of hours of real-world field testing, and in extensive carrier partner testing, the information shows there is no discernible difference in the wireless performance of whatsoever of the models”.
Bloomberg
quoted analysts and engineering advisers who stated that “[Apple] don’t want ane version to get the reputation that it is meliorate” and that “This may not bear upon the fanboys, simply it may make other consumers think twice near buying an Apple telephone, especially if they think they might be purchasing a sub-standard product”.[98]

Explosions and smoke emissions

[edit]

In a like manner with the now-discontinued Samsung Galaxy Note seven, there have been reports of the iPhone 7 exploding or emitting smoke. In September 2016, one device reportedly exploded while in transit,[99]
[100]
while another one had a “malfunction that acquired the battery to blow up internally”.[101]
Another report about an iPhone 7 emitting smoke and “melting” was published in October 2016.[102]

Perception of slogan in Cantonese-speaking regions

[edit]

The iPhone 7’s “This is 7” slogan has been misunderstood when translated to certain other languages.[103]
[104]
The telephone’s slogan in Mainland Communist china is “vii, is hither;” (Chinese:
7,在此; pinyin:

vii, zài cǐ
), while in Hong Kong, its slogan is, “This, is iPhone seven;” (Chinese:
這,就是iPhone 7; Jyutping:

ze5, zau6 si6 iPhone 7
).

In Cantonese, the local language of Hong Kong, the slogan could be mistakenly interpreted every bit “This is penis”. “Tsat”, (Chinese:
; Jyutping:

cat6
), is a common slang term for an cock penis, and “seven”, (Chinese:
; Jyutping:

cat1
), which varies but in tone, is often used as a euphemism.[

Replacing the home push button

[edit]

In the iPhone seven, Apple added a software lock that prevents individuals from attempting to replace the domicile push button on their own. Users are now required to go to an Apple tree Store to have repairs done, with “recalibration” of the button being necessary. This is a pace further than Apple went with iPhone 5S, half dozen and 6S, where merely Touch on ID functionality would get disabled but the “return-to-home” functionality all the same worked.[105]
[106]

Failure to connect to cellular service

[edit]

Some iPhone 7 devices with the model numbers A1660, A1779 and A1780 suffer from a problem where they show a “No service” message even when cellular reception is available. Apple tree will repair those devices for free within iv years of the first retail sale of the unit of measurement.[107]

Loop Illness

[edit]

Some iPhone 7 devices suffer from a problem that affects audio in the device. Users reported a grayed-out speaker button during calls, grayed-out vox memo icon, and occasional freezing of the device. A few users likewise complained that lightning EarPods failed to work with the device and that the Wi-Fi push button would be grayed out after restarting the iPhone. On May 4, 2018, Apple best-selling the result through an internal memo. If an affected iPhone 7 was no longer covered past warranty, Apple tree said its service providers could request an exception for this particular result. The exemptions abruptly ended in July 2018 when Apple tree deleted the internal certificate. Many customers accept complained Apple has charged customers around $350 to fix the issue. Many customers complain the issue first appeared after a software update.

Sales

[edit]

Apple has deliberately withheld pre-society sales numbers, citing that these are “no longer a representative metric for our investors and customers”.[108]
Without releasing specific numbers, T-Mobile Us stated that the iPhone 7 had broken the carrier’s all-time tape for first-24-hour interval pre-order sales. The following weekend, T-Mobile United states of america stated that iPhone 7 was its biggest iPhone launch ever, being “up nearly 4x compared to the side by side nigh popular iPhone”.[109]

On September fourteen, 2016, two days before the iPhone vii went on auction, Apple appear that due to high demand, they had sold out of all “jet black” iPhone 7’s, and all colors of the iPhone seven Plus.[110]
This caused issues for customers in the iPhone Upgrade Program, who were unable to reserve new phones.[111]
After customer complaints and a class action lawsuit,[112]
Apple made changes to ensure members of the plan could get new phones equally soon as possible.[113]

In May 2017, analytics research company Strategy Analytics announced that iPhone seven and iPhone 7 Plus were the best-selling smartphones worldwide during the offset quarter of 2017, selling 21.5 meg and 17.four one thousand thousand units, respectively.[114]
[115]

U.s. carrier merchandise-in deals

[edit]

For the initial U.S. sales of the iPhone vii, all four major wireless carriers announced merchandise-in deals. Under the deals, the monthly installment plan price of the iPhone 7 is negated by a monthly credit on consumers’ bill, only consumers who cancel their service with the carrier or pay off the phone prior to the installment contract completion volition not receive credits for the remaining months.[116]
Jacob Kastrenakes of
The Verge
noted that the deals effectively constituted a return to two-year telephone contracts, in which the deals “essentially lock you into that carrier for ii years”.[117]

In the wake of these deals, Verizon announced they had seen an increment in sales over the release of the previous year’s iPhone 6S, AT&T said that sales had exceeded its expectations, and T-Mobile and Sprint announced “huge increases in sales”, with T-Mobile seeing a demand roughly 4 times higher for the 7 than the 6.[118]

Reports well-nigh trimmed production

[edit]

In December 2016,
DigiTimes
reported that Apple had reduced product of the iPhone seven because of decreasing demand for the product afterward the initial surge of interest waned. A reason cited was consumers and suppliers turning their attention to next year’s iPhone model.[119]
[120]

A new report from
Nikkei
at the finish of December included details on sales and production of the iPhone vii. The report, “based on information from suppliers”, stated that Apple would trim production of the iPhone seven past ten% in the beginning quarter of 2017, following “sluggish” sales.
Nikkei
reported that Apple previously trimmed production of the iPhone 7 by xx% due to accumulated inventory of the previous model, merely that the new models had “sold more than sluggishly than expected”. Additionally, the report notes that the “iPhone 7 Plus, which features 2 cameras on its back face up, remains popular”, only “a shortage of camera sensors has curbed Apple’s ability to meet demand for the phones”.[121]
